When Jesus Delivers You!

February 29, 2016

Grace to you! We live in an area where the majority of people believe Jesus Christ is the only Savior. Most have even attended church some during their life and confess that God has helped them in tough situations. Yet in spite of this, there has been no remarkable change in their love for Jesus. Biblically speaking, how do we reconcile these issues?

Let’s read Luke 17:11-19, “11 On the way to Jerusalem he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. 12 And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance 13 and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” 14 When he saw them he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed. 15 Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; 16 and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. 17 Then Jesus answered, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? 18 Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 And he said to him, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.”

First, we need to see the dire need the people were in. To have leprosy meant not only was there no medicine to prevent or cure it, but it also meant living a life away from society. Because leprosy could spread to others, they were quarantined from all of society. They even had to yell, “Unclean!” when they came around people to warn them. We all experience great need and it seems at times there is no remedy for the problem we are facing!

Second, they came to the right Person, Jesus Christ, for help! He heard their pleas for mercy and answered. Many have cried out to Jesus in prayer for help and He has graciously answered them!

Third, we see different responses in the ones who are healed. Nine of them leave Jesus after they are healed. They believed Jesus could help them, they cried out to Him for help, and He delivered them. But once they got their answer, they didn’t really see the need for Jesus any further. Their moment of crisis was over. However, one of the healed lepers returned to give God praise and thanks through the Lord Jesus.

What made the difference? Although all ten had God work in their lives and all ten had physical deliverance, only one had a spiritual deliverance! By faith, He saw His greater need in coming to Jesus. And although God delivered him, the one leper knew what his greatest need was: Jesus Himself. How about you? Has Jesus answered your prayers only for you to go back to your comfortable life? Or have you seen than you need a greater deliverance? You need for God to save you (See verse 19) and give you a heart that will follow Jesus even after He answers your prayers. Nine used Jesus for their own agenda, and the one wanted Jesus for who He was. Which one are you?
