Who is God? God is Love

February 2, 2015

Grace to you! This week we will look at God’s love. It’s often one of the most misunderstood characteristics of God. Many have reduced God’s love to sentimentality and mushiness! It’s not uncommon to hear songs about God’s love and it sound like God is one’s boyfriend! Or God’s love is redefined in such a way that it does away with God’s holy standards. We often hear people say in light of some wrong they’ve done that God’s love is all that matters. In their view God’s love just wipes away His holy standards and people are going to be accepted by God no matter what they do! Now the bible does not teach that we can be good enough to earn our way into heaven. We are merely trying to balance God’s love with His other characteristics without excluding one to the damage of the other.

So how does God actually love? God loves in a way that is consistent with all of His characteristics. His love is a holy love, a gracious love, an all knowing love, etc. We often want to use God’s love as a false sense of security with God that He will not take our sin that seriously. But how does the bible speak about God’s love?

God’s love is part of who He is. “God is love.” (1 John 4:8) It is God’s love that moved Him to send Jesus Christ in the world to die as a substitute for sinners. (John 3:16) It is God’s love that extends the free offer to any person who will turn from their sins and place their full trust in Jesus Christ to forgive them of their sins and give them a relationship with God. God’s love is indeed beyond description.

What is the goal of every person’s life? What are we created for? We are made “to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge.” (Ephesians 3:19) But how can this be? Only if we turn to Christ as our sin bearer, and commit our lives to Him to be His disciples can this be true for us. Then we shall know and experience the love of God that is in the blessed Lord Jesus.

It is God’s love, however, that will lead Him to exclude people from heaven. How you say? Because God will protect His kingdom and people from the presence of future evil entering into heaven and defiling it. “Nothing evil will be allowed to enter, nor anyone who practices shameful idolatry and dishonesty–but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.” (Revelation 21:27) So here is the crux of the issue. Right now, you are under God’s love to give you time to turn from living for yourself to live for the One who died for sinners, the Lord Jesus. If you do you can have the fullness of His love; if you don’t even what love you have now will be cut off from you in the future. What will you do with God’s love?
