Christmas is here: the Lord has come! Part 3

December 17, 2014

Grace to you! So far we’ve looked at two verses that predicted that the Messiah (Christ) would be man and also God. This is the message of Christmas: that God the Son took on human flesh to bring salvation to all who believe in Him.

In the American mindset, Christmas has been generalized to mean good feelings and a vague, undefined happiness among the populace. However, the Christmas message is one full of specific hope and explicit content. God has come in His Son to redeem man from his sin. This is good news because no one is good enough to earn God’s favor. Christmas reminds us that God’s grace is great and His offer is open to any and all who believe in Jesus’ life, death, burial, and resurrection as payment for their sins.

But in the midst of all the Christmassy cheer, the baby in the manger also makes every Christmas season a dire and sober warning! Many only think of the baby in the manger in terms of ‘cuteness, special, and somewhat mystical.’ But the baby in the manger is more than just mysterious Christmas feelings. The baby in the manger is a God sized warning that judgment is coming to all men!

Hear the words of warning that come with the Christ child’s birth: “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, For He has visited us and accomplished redemption for His people, And has raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of David His servant– As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from of old– Salvation FROM OUR ENEMIES, And FROM THE HAND OF ALL WHO HATE US (Luke 1:68-71) Jesus was born to bring salvation AND God’s judgment on those who will not commit their life to Him! The Christ child, the little baby in the manger, is a dire warning to all humanity that God is serious about judging man for his sin. God has sent the greatest warning and encouragement to sinners to turn to Jesus while there is time! “Whoever will call upon the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13)

Why was the baby born? For us to ‘oohh’ and ‘aahh’ at? For us to get warm fuzzy feelings at a certain time of year? No, the baby in the manger is a stark reminder that God “has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through Jesus Christ whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.” (Acts 17:31)

The baby in the manger was born to die. His death was to satisfy God’s wrath our sins deserve. His birth shows that God is coming to judge us. Will you be found forgiven in Christ on judgment day? Or will you miss an eternity of Christmas away from the presence of the Lord? What you do with the baby in the manger makes all the difference!
