The Gospel in all the bible: In the Beginning

September 15, 2014

Grace to you all! Today we begin a 5 week series on the gospel in all of scripture. What is the gospel? It literally means ‘good news.’ It is God’s plan of saving sinners like you and me. God brings us into a relationship with Himself through His Son Jesus Christ when we turn from our sins and turn to Christ for salvation. Now immediately some will think: “I don’t recall the Old Testament talking about Jesus.” Is Jesus and the salvation He brings really the message of all the bible? This week we will look at the first promise of the gospel of Jesus Christ in the bible. Genesis 3:15 says, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.”

After Adam and Eve sinned, God’s curse fell upon mankind. God also pronounces a curse on the Serpent, or Satan, for tempting our original Parents into sin. God promises to put enmity or hostility between the Devil and mankind for working together to disobey God. But in the midst of judgment, there is hope. God promises a ‘seed’ or descendent of the woman will one day come and destroy Satan. What is fascinating about this promise from God is that the descendent will be unlike any other: it will be “the seed of the woman.” If you recall when the bible talks about “so-and-so BEGAT so-and-so” it’s always along the male lineage. But not here! God promises that through a woman will the promised One come who would destroy the Devil.

Does the bible tells us of One who was born of a woman alone with no human father? Yes it does! “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 1:18) There was a reason Christ was to be born of the virgin Mary: to fulfill the promise of Genesis 3:15!

So how did Jesus understand His life and ministry? “The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.” (1 John 3:8) By destroying Satan, we no longer have to fear death if we are in Christ (Heb. 2:14,15) Christ has conquered our sin for us and man’s greatest enemy the Evil One. If we are in Christ, then we have another promise: “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.” (Rom 16:20) Are you on the winning side? Do you belong to the Seed of the Woman, Jesus Christ, or are you one of the seeds of the Devil? (John 8:44,45) Next week the gospel in the Old Testament.
