Jesus: The Law Fulfiller

September 15, 2014

Grace to you! This week we are going to look at how Jesus fulfills both the blessing and curse aspects of the law. When God speaks to man, it is law and not suggestion. All His words are law for man. In short, when man obeys God he is blessed. When he disobeys it brings a curse. When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, a curse was placed upon them and all of creation. The bible’s formula can be summarized as follows: “If you obey, you will be blessed and live. If you disobey, you will be cursed and die.” Deuteronomy 27 and 28 lay this out in detail.

Blessing and life is held out to anyone who can keep the law: “So you shall keep My statutes and My judgments, by which a man may live IF he does them; I am the LORD.“ (Leviticus 18:5) The problem is that man cannot and does not submit to the law of God. (Romans 8:7,8) The result? “The payment for sin is death.” (Romans 6:23) Sin is defined as disobeying God and His law. So how can man ever have the blessing of life with God if he can’t keep any of the law? How can man escape the curses of the law for his willful disobedience?

Jesus provides the remedy for us: “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.” (Matthew 5:17) Christ came to fulfill both aspects of the law. Let me say something shocking first: It was NOT enough BY ITSELF for Jesus to die on the cross to save you from your sins! No! Jesus had to first obey the law of God and be without sin in order to win the blessings of God. Then Christ died for our sins by “becoming a curse for us” (Galatians 3:10) since our sins were put upon Him.

The gospel is this: by Jesus’ obedience we get the blessing of eternal life and by Him taking our sin upon Himself He took our law breaking curse. When we put our faith in Christ, He satisfies both aspects of the law. We get His righteousness as IF we obeyed all of God’s law and He becomes our sin bearer as IF He committed our law breaking. This is the glorious gospel of scripture! Christ had to live & obey and be cursed & die to give us full salvation and righteousness before God! (2 Corinthians 5:21) If Jesus only died for our sins but didn’t come to obey the law, we would only have our sins forgiven but still lack positive righteousness which we need to stand before God. But He did both! Committing your heart to Christ brings forgiveness of your law violation and gives you credit for full obedience on your account before God!
