Jesus: The Greater Temple, part 2

September 15, 2014

Grace to you! Last week we see how God’s intention for the tabernacle and temple was for God and man to be able to once again have a relationship with each other. The temple’s purpose found its fulfillment in Jesus Christ who is the Greater Temple! This week we look at how believers in the Lord Jesus Christ also fulfill a greater temple purpose.

In Israel’s history, the temple had been built (950ish BC), destroyed (586 BC), rebuilt (about 516 BC), and destroyed again. (70 AD) God had promised thru His prophets He would make a better temple. It would be a place where the all the nations of the world could worship the one true and living God. “In that day I will raise up the fallen booth of David, And wall up its breaches; I will also raise up its ruins And rebuild it as in the days of old; That they may possess the remnant of Edom And all the nations who are called by My name,” Declares the LORD who does this.” (Amos 9:11-12) Many seem to think there is gonna be a new future temple made of brick and mortar in Israel one day. But this is not God’s intention. The apostle Paul tells us the real temple God is making is out of His people: “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit. (Ephesians 2:19-22) Absolutely incredible! God making those whom He saves into the very dwelling place for His presence!

Scripture presents this as “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” (Colossians 1:27) Christ dwells in the hearts of His people through the Holy Spirit. (See Romans 8:9-11) The Holy Spirit, the 3rd Person of the Trinity, is God dwelling literally within the life of the believer. “16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? (1Corinthians 3:16) Paul reminds the believers collectively that together they make up the one temple where God dwells or ‘tabernacles’!

At the end of history when the new heavens and new earth are brought in, Scripture tells us “no temple [is]in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.” (Revelation 21:22) No physical building is needed because God Himself will once again dwell in and with His people! How about you? Do you know the joy of ‘Christ in you’? Will you ask Him to bring you into a saving relationship with Himself and be a part of His greater temple?
