Jesus: The Greater Land Promise

September 15, 2014

Grace to you! We’ve been studying how Jesus is the fulfillment of all the scriptures. This week we will look at the land promises God has given His people and how they find their fulfillment in the blessed Lord Jesus Christ.

From the beginning, God gave man land. Eden was a garden, the special parcel of land Adam and Eve called home. They were to exercise dominion and stewardship (Genesis 1:26-28) and expand the Garden of Eden to the rest of the world. But sin entered the picture because of man and God put a curse upon all creation. (See Genesis 3:17-19) Man was driven from his inheritance into the now threatening, sin cursed wilderness.

But God came to Abraham and promised him and his descendents a new land which God would show him. (Genesis 12:1) This land would later be called Palestine or as it’s known today Israel. Throughout the Old Testament story God repeated His promise to give Abraham and his descendents a future inheritance of land. At times, Israel seems to be gaining much ground (pun intended!) on acquiring their possession. At other times, God purposely removes them from the land for their disobedience. How is God gonna be faithful to give His people their inheritance yet the people can’t obey enough for God to bless them? The tension builds!

Later in the Old Testament, the Lord promises again to give His people a land inheritance but now the promise gets larger: it begins to include a new heaven and new earth! (Isaiah 65:17) The promise has now been expanded from the land of Palestine to include the entire renewed cosmos! How can a disobedient people inherit an even greater blessing?!

Enter the Lord Jesus. Man was required to obey God perfectly in order to gain the inheritance. Yet God had made an unconditional promise to give them land. How can these two be brought together? By the Lord Jesus Christ perfectly obeying the Father, He acquired the rights and inherited the promise for those who have faith in Him. The end result? Those who believe in Jesus Christ are seen as ‘in Christ’ and because Christ won the rights and acquired the promise, they will inherit the promised new heavens and earth! Hear Jesus:”Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5) As believers, we “are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.” (2 Peter 3:13) For those who do not know Christ, their future inheritance will be “…into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 22:13) Your stuff here is not permanent; why do you live for it as if it is? Will Christ and the new heavens and earth be your inheritance (Psalm 16:5) or outer darkness? What will you do with Christ?
