4TH COMMANDMENT EXODUS 20:8-11 “REMEMBER THE SABBATH” PART B

June 22, 2010

SABBATH VIEWS

1)      7TH DAY SABBATTARIANSIM – MOSTLY 7TH DAY ADVENTISTS

  1. ARGUMENTS FOR 7TH DAY SABBATTARIANISM

                                                               i.      SABBATH IS ROOTED IN CREATION…

  1. RECALL ROOTED ALSO IN REDEMPTION…IN NT, THESE ARE BROUGHT TOGETHER IN CHRIST AS FULFILLMENT!! IN OTHER WORDS, THE SABBATH HAS REACHED ITS GOAL!!

ii.      As Christians, we don’t choose to ignore the other nine, why do we change or ignore the 4th Commandment? We believe the seventh day SABBATH is part of God’s law.

  1. BECAUSE IT IS NOT COMMANDED ANYWHERE IN THE NT! REASON WHY IT’S NOT REPEATED BECAUSE AGAIN HAS REACHED ITS GOAL OF WHY IT WAS GIVEN, CHRIST, SEE HEBREWS 4

                                                            iii.      JESUS UPHELD THE SABBATH

  1. RIGHT, TO FULFILL THE PURPOSE AND FUNCTION OF THE LAW THAT WE COULD AND WOULD NOT!! “DO NOT THINK I CAME TO ABOLISH BUT FULFILL.” “ALL THE PROMISES OF GOD ARE YES IN HIM (CHRIST)”. WE NOW FULFILL THE SABBATH BY BEING IN CHRIST…WE ARE RESTORED, AT REST WITH GOD (Cf. ‘WE WERE AT ENMITY WITH GOD BUT CHRIST DIED TO REMOVE IT.”) (CHRIST ALSO OBEYED, RECALL PURPOSES OF LAW: SHOW US OUR SIN, SHOW CHRIST’S OBEDIENT LIFE IN PLACE FOR US AND SHOW THE CURSE CHRIST TOOK ON HIM WHERE WE DISOBEYED!!)
  2. NOTE: WHY DIDN’T JESUS SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THE SABBATH AFTER HIS RESURRECTION?! OR THE APOSTLES? BECAUSE IT WOULD HAVE UNDERMINED WHAT CHRIST CAME TO DO AND HAD JUST ACCOMPLISHED!!!
  3. APOSTLES CONTINUED TO KEEP THE SABBATH
    1. SILLY! THIS WAS ENTIRELY EVANGELISTIC…SEE ACTS 13
    2. WHY WOULD THEY GO TO ‘SYNAGOGUE’ TO WORSHIP GOD RATHER THAN MEET WITH THE CHURCH IF THIS WAS NOT EVANGELSTIC?!?!
    3. HISTORICALLY, CONSTANTINE THE ROMAN EMPEROR MADE THE CHANGE
      1. THIS IS NOT TRUE, BECAUSE WE SEE THE CHURCH IN ACTS MEETING ON THE ‘FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK’ (MENTIONED 8 TIMES) OR ‘THE LORD’S DAY’ EMPHASIZED
      2. EVEN IF IT WERE TRUE, WHAT DOES IT MATTER? WHAT IS OUR AUTHORITY? HISTORY OR THE BIBLE?! W/ CONSTANTINE, AT BEST HE ONLY ENFORCED NATIONALLY ALREADY WHAT THE CHURCH WAS DOING PRIVATELY!!  JUST LIKE W/ CHRISTIANITY, WAS A PRIVATE RELIGION OF SOME, NOW MADE IT NATIONAL RELIGION OF NATION.
  4. AT BEST…-COUNTER: OK TO HAVE IT BUT NOT FORCE IT ON OTHERS..COL. 2:16,17, 20-23, ROMAN 14:15
  5. AT WORST – CULTIC, LEGALISM

                                                               i.      CF ‘SUNDAY WORSHIP IS TAKING MARK OF THE BEAST” “I gave them my SABBATHs, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord that sanctify them.” Ezekiel 20:12. “It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth.” Exodus 31:17.  ALSO Antichrist in Daniel 7:25, God said it would “think to change times and laws.”

ii.      BEAST IS CATHOLIC CHURCH, CATH. CHURCH CHANGED WORSHIP TO SUNDAY, ERGO SUNDAY IS MARK OF BEAST…SHOWS YOU’VE LEFT TRUE CHURCH BY WORSHIPPING ON SUNDAY!!!

  1. RESPONSE: HIGHLY DEBATABLE CATH. CHURCH IS THE BEAST OF REVELATION,
  2. REV. 13:16,17 NOR ANYWHERE ELSE SAYS WORSHIPPING ON SUNDAY IS MARK OF THE BEAST…IF GOD IS CONCERNED ABOUT US AVOIDING THIS, WHY DIDN’T HE JUST COME OUT AND SAY IT AND MAKE IT CLEAR? CF. PERSECUITY OF SCRIPT.
  3. CF. ‘FOREVER-NESS’ OF SABBATH AS SIGN TO CIRCUMCISION!! FULFILLED, AGAIN, IN CHRIST…HE IS THE SIGN!!!

2)      CHRISTIAN SABBATARIANSIM – MOSTLY REFORMED/PRESBYTERIANS

  1. CHRISTIAN SABBATH VIEW: 1)  the Saviour teaches that the SABBATH was made, not merely for Jew, the man in exceptional circumstances, but “for man,” the man as such, i.e., for all men in all ages and lands. SO SINCE SABBATH NOT REPEATED, IT MUST BE SUNDAY BECAUSE WE NEED ONE DAY IN SEVEN..FOR “necessity and mercy,” to religious rest. 2) He declared that He, as “the Son of Man, is lord also of the SABBATH.” He has restored this among other things which constituted man’s natural heritage of blessing forfeited by sin. And therefore He claims a “propriety in” or lordship over the SABBATH, and asserts and seals the claim by transposing the resting day to the week’s beginning from its end, and giving to this Christian SABBATH the name of “the Lord’s Day.” What the SABBATH law requires in its substance is the consecration of one day in seven. Which day in seven shall be consecrated, is merely a question of form. THE SABBATH LORD CAN CHANGE IT, BUT WOULD NOT ‘GET RID OF IT.”

                                                               i.      HE DIDN’T JUST TRANSPOSE IT, BUT FULFILLED IT…AGAIN, IT REACHED ITS GOAL.

  1. In light of Christ’s fulfillment of the SABBATH and the presence of this commandment here in this passage, is the SABBATH part of the Old Covenant that has “grown old and vanished away” (Hebrews 8:13)? “No.”  part of God’s moral law established at creation and intended for all mankind—not just for Israel under the Old Covenant. The SABBATH is a gift of God made for man. Jesus said in Mark 2:27, “The SABBATH was made [or more literally “created”] for man and not man for the SABBATH.

                                                               i.      DOESN’T TAKE INTO ACCOUNT SABBATH IS ALSO CONNECTED W/ REDEMPTION – DEUT 5 AND BOTH ARE BROUGHT TOGETHER IN CHRIST, OUR SABBATH REST!

  1. it appears that this command was not something new to the Israelites, for the command was to remember the SABBATH day, presupposing they already knew what it was.  Furthermore, the legislation of the SABBATH was larger than just rest from work for the Israelite people, for the “sojourner” and even livestock were to observe the SABBATH….

                                                               i.      REPLY: BUT THE SOUJOURNER, ETC WERE PART OF THE COV COMMUNITY IS WHY THEY WERE EXPECTED TO TAKE PART AND AGAIN BEFORE CHRIST CAME.

ii.      WHERE IS THE TEXTUAL SUPPORT FOR THIS TRANSFER? IT IS A THEOLOGICAL REASONING BASED ON SOME WRONG ASSUMPTIONS LIKE THERE IS A DIRECT RELATION IN ALL THINGS FROM THE OT TO THE NT…OR FAILURE TO SEE THE BIG PICTURE LIKE THE SABBATH ANTICPATING THE MESSIAH AS FULFILLMENT

  1. FURTHER CONSIDERATIONS
  2. GAL. 4:9-11 PAUL REBUKES THEM FOR TURNING BACK TO OBSERVING DAYS, MONTHS, YEARS  “9But now that you have come to know God, or rather(A) to be known by God,(B) how can you turn back again to(C) the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more? 10(D) You observe days and months and seasons and years! 11I am afraid(E) I may have labored over you in vain.”  CONTEXT IS NOW THAT CHRIST HAS COME
  3. In Colossians 2:16-17, 13When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature,[b] God made you[c] alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. 15And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.[d]  16Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a SABBATH day. 17These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. Paul explicitly refers to the SABBATH as a shadow of Christ, which is no longer binding since the substance (Christ) has come. It is quite clear in those verses that the weekly SABBATH is in view. The phrase “a festival or a new moon or a SABBATH day” refers to the annual, monthly, and weekly holy days of the Jewish calendar (cf. 1 Chronicles 23:31; 2 Chronicles 2:4; 31:3; Ezekiel 45:17; Hosea 2:11).
  4. The New Testament never commands Christians to observe the SABBATH.
  5. In our only glimpse of an early church worship service in the New Testament, the church met on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7).
  6. When the Apostles met at the Jerusalem council (Acts 15), they did not impose SABBATH keeping on the Gentile believers.
  7. The apostle Paul warned the Gentiles about many different sins in his epistles, but breaking the SABBATH was never one of them.
  8. In Romans 14:5, Paul forbids those who observe the SABBATH (these were no doubt Jewish believers) to condemn those who do not (Gentile believers). Listen to Romans 14:5, “One person regards one day above another. Another regards every day alike. Each person is fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day observes it for the Lord.” There were Jews who had come to faith in Christ and had a hard time letting go of the SABBATH. It was pretty much ingrained in them. They thought they were still obeying the Lord by maintaining Old Covenant SABBATH law. They observed it for the Lord. He who observes the day observes it for the Lord. He who eats following the dietary laws does it for the Lord. He who gives thanks to God, he who eats not for the Lord he doesn’t eat and gives thanks to God. In other words, as verse 5 says, each person is fully convinced in his own mind does what he thinks is right. It really doesn’t matter.
  9. HISTORICALLY, The early church fathers, from Ignatius to Augustine, taught that the Old Testament SABBATH had been abolished and that the first day of the week (Sunday) was the day when Christians should meet for worship (contrary to the claim of many seventh-day sabbatarians who claim that Sunday worship was not instituted until the fourth century).
  10. m.    Sunday has not replaced Saturday as the SABBATH. Rather the Lord’s Day is a time when believers gather to commemorate His resurrection, which occurred on the first day of the week. Every day to the believer is one of SABBATH rest, since we have ceased from our spiritual labors.

3)      SO WHAT ARE WE TO CONCLUDE ABOUT SUNDAYS THEN?

  1. a.       LAW HAS BEEN ABOLISHED; CHRIST FULFILLED IT..CHURCH MEETS ON SUNDAY OUT OF TRADITION AND CELEBRATION RATHER THAN ‘SABBATARIAN VIEW’ WHETHER ADVENTIST OR THOSE WHO SAY SUNDAY IS THE CHRISTIAN SABBATH
  2. b.      NO EXPLICIT COMMAND TO WORSHIP ON SUNDAY, BUT CLEAR EXAMPLES OF MEETING ON ‘FIRST DAY OF WEEK’, BUT ALSO MET ON MANY DAYS OF THE WEEK!!!
  3. SHOULD SEEK TO MAXIMIZE OUR WORSHIP OF HIM THIS DAY RATHER THAN THINKING HOW I CAN MINIMIZE IT OR ‘CHECK THE COMPLETE BOX’
  4. CAN I WORK ON SUNDAY? NT DOESN’T FORBID IT, BUT SEEMS TO CARRY WEIGHT OF ‘WHY WOULD YOU IF YOU CAN HELP IT? DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT HAS HAPPENED AND WHAT THIS NOW MEANS? WE ‘GET’ TO MEET ON RESURRECTION DAY!!! THE NEW BEGINNING, CELEBRATION COMMERATION!!!” IT’S A ‘WE GET TO ATTITUDE TOWARDS SUNDAY’ RATHER THAN A ‘HAVE TO’ ATTIDUTE TOWARDS SUNDA WORSHIP!!
  5. IS IT WRONG TO REPLACE SUN WORSHIP W/ SAT NITE SERVICES? NO, BUT IF I CAN SHOW THE GOSPEL A LITTLE MORE CLEARER BY WORSHIPPING ON SUNDAY IN LIGHT OF THE RESURRECTION (A REMINDER OF IT), IM GONNA BE AS GOSPEL, GRACE MOTIVATED AS I CAN!!!

4)      REMAINING ISSUES

  1. BIBLICAL VIEW OF WORK

                                                               i.      ARE WE STILL REQUIRED TO WORK SIX DAYS? DOESN’T SAY THAT BUT THIS: ” Colossians 3:23 Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men” AGAIN, MORE ABOUT WHO YOU ARE WORKING FOR THAN GETTING A ‘SIX DAY’ CHECKLIST DONE!

ii.      1 Thessalonians 4:11 and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands, just as we commanded you, (1Th 4:11 NAU)

iii.      2 Thessalonians 3:10 For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either. …NEED A RETURN OF DEFINITION BETWEEN LAZY, POOR, AND DISABLED…

                                                           iv.      BIBLICAL PLACE FOR REST/ENJOYMENT

  1. ILLUSTRATION: PASTOR IN FLORIDA, OTHER MINISTER SAID “DEVIL DON’T TAKE ANY DAYS OFF”… REPLY: “THAT’S OK, DEVIL HAS NEVER BEEN MY EXAMPLE ANYWAYS.”
  2. BUT NOT IDOLATROUS PURSUIT OF REST OR WORK…ALL THINGS IN MODERATION…HOW DO I KNOW? WILL I SIN TO GET IT OR SIN IF I DON’T GET IT?
  3. SO HOW DOES THE GOSPEL FIT IN THIS?

                                                               i.      CHRIST OUR SABBATH, WHO WORKED FOR US BECAUSE WE FAILED. HE SUCCEEDED AND ABSORBED OUR DISOBEDIENCE AND BECAUSE HE WAS SUCCESSFUL NOW RESTS AT GOD’S RIGHT HAND…HIS WORK IS FINISHED, YOU CAN’T ADD TO IT OR TAKE FROM IT…YOU CAN’T FIND ANOTHER WAY, ONLY WAY TO SABBATH REST WITH GOD, THRU CHRIST!
