Church Bulletin 11

February 27, 2009

Last week I said that psychology/psychiatry have been the biggest blight on modern day Christianity. I want to show this week a brief history of psychology’s history and how even its foundations are anti-biblical. The history of psychology has its beginnings, practically speaking, in William James and Sigmund Freud.

William James, called the father of modern psychology, was an avowed naturalist. He was interested in truth only so far as it had pragmatic results. Truth was not true in and of itself but true because it ‘worked in the experience of the person.’ Sounds much like today: “That may be true for you but that’s not true for me!” James, wanting to understand human nature and how to study it, basically took Jonathan Edward’s ‘Treatise Concerning Religious Affections’, stripped it of its God-centered content, and used the methodology of Edward’s study of  human actions, experiences, etc. Edward’s wrote his book during the Great Awakening to biblically look at the experiences and actions of people during the time of the Revival. James secularized Edward’s approach. Why? Because he saw Edward’s methodology (Biblically based!) was very perceptive and yet James was a naturalist (a Darwinian evolutionist) and didn’t need a God-centered approach to life. So here we have the pagans stealing from the Bible and turning and using it to eventually undermine the Bible! As a side note, this is exactly what pagans do to function in the world. They HAVE to ‘borrow capital’ from the Christian worldview to function in reality. No worldview, religion, etc. fully explains and corresponds with reality. Somewhere their philosophy, etc. breaks down because it’s not built on the only revealed truth, the veritable Word of God! In contrast, William James said, in explaining reality, “The idea of a universal evolution lends itself to a doctrine of general meliorism (the idea that life can be made better by human effort!) and progress which fits the religious needs of the healthy-minded so well that it seems almost as if it might have been created for their use.’ In simple terms, evolution helps us understand why our ‘religious leanings’ find relief in helping the world. Evolution is driving us religiously to help the world and eventually ourselves to ‘progress naturally’. (That’s code language for evolve!)

Sigmund Freud, 1856-1939, is no different. He too was an avowed anti-Christ evolutionist. “Like Darwin’s theory, Freud’s is unprovable, unfalsifiable, grand in scope, and anti-supernatural; yet it continues to be viewed as scientific and remains generally unquestioned.” (Almy, 103) Freud’s largest contributions to modern psychology are the theories (note: not facts!) of the subconscious mind, the acceptance of the medical model of disease for ‘mental health,’ and biological/environmental determinism. We look at these in order.

The subconscious mind plays huge in today’s theories and treatments. No (zero, nada, nothing!) empirical data is available to prove the concept of ‘a subconscious mind.’ Freud’s theory of the existence of a subconscious mind is built SOLELY on the idea of evolution. How? He believed the subconscious is the result of primeval origins that lay dormant in us, deep within our minds. In other words, the subconscious mind is the leftover product from our prior evolving! Wow! How ‘Christian’ is that? Need I say what the Bible would say to that? Why would we build a theory, or actually multiple theories!, about man’s nature and problems on the idea of evolution? And then on top of that come up with evolutionary based answers, (because if man is evolved then the answer must be evolutionary based! See the flow of thought?) to ‘heal, psychologize, counsel’ the counselee/patient? Psalm 11:5 says, “If the foundation is destroyed, what can the righteous do?” When will we as Christians stop playing lip service to 2 Tim. 3:16-17, 2 Peter 3:1, 1 Cor. 10:31, 2 Cor. 5:9, etc and base our lives, counsel, help, etc. on the infallible, inerrant Word of God? We say we believe the Bible but for the last 75 years the church has functionally abandoned the Bible in the area of counseling as the authoritative source for life. The other 3 contributions of Freud to modern counseling theories, (over 150 of them! At least 149 of them have to be wrong it would seem! There can only be 1 truth!) I will cover next week. Got questions? Good. Love, HCK.
