Basics of Biblical Evangelism

December 25, 2008

Sharing the Gospel
What do people need to know (actually convinced of!) to be saved:
1)    Who God is: Can’t love Someone you don’t know!
a.    His attributes – righteous, holy, just, God’s omni’s, gracious, merciful, forgiving, redeemer, etc.
b.    His works that reveal His wonder….Consider His word-deeds….history vs. revelation…His deeds only make sense in light of His revealing word. Cf. Exodus 20: 1, 2 is before the 10 commandments
2)    The law:
a.    The purpose of the law/revelation of Scripture
i.    To reveal the righteousness and character of God – Cf. Old Testament
ii.    To reveal our sin, and hence show us our need – Gal 3:10,11/ Rom. 3:23/ Rom 7:7
iii.    To reveal the righteousness of Christ – how He fulfilled the righteous requirements of the law for us AND why He was an acceptable sacrifice (this also shown in His resurrection as we will see!)…His righteous fulfillment of the Law shows people why they need Jesus and why He is the only Way! NOTE: it was not enough for Jesus just to die on the cross and pay for our penalty of sin – because we still wouldn’t have any POSITIVE RIGHTEOUSNESS if He hadn’t also lived a perfectly righteous life.
1.    Draw double imputation diagram
2.    Verses on Him: Matt 5:17-19// Romans 3:21; 8:1-4, esp. vs 4// Acts 13:37-39// Phil. 3: 9// 1 Cor. 1:30// 2 Cor. 5:21//Illustrated – Matt 26:59, 60  Luke 23:22// Hebrews 10:1-10
3)    God’s response to their sin: Rom 6:23// 1 Cor. 6:9-11// Eph. 2:1-3
4)    The gospel: Romans 1:1-4/ 1 Cor. 15: 3, 4/ Acts 2:14-36/ Acts 13:26-41
a.    THE RESPONSE is NOT the gospel – It is what God has done, said, and revealed in His Son, Jesus Christ!
b.    Christ fulfilled the Scriptures (The Old Testament Prophecies)
c.    Jesus was the promised Son/Messiah from the line of David
d.    God showed proof of His approval of His Son’s work and of who He claimed to be by raising Him from the dead. This proof includes His divinity, His atoning work paid the sin debt, He will judge the living and the dead, He is returning in bodily form, He was the unique Son of God, He is the only way to the Father, etc. – any and all claims Jesus made were validated/proved in TIME AND SPACE! by His resurrection from the dead – Rom. 4:25
5)    God’s invitation AND command: a) Come – Luke 19:10/ Matt 11:28/ John 1:39; 6:37   b) Repent/die to self/take up your cross – these are commands, not presented as options
6)    Their response
a.    Repentance –  a) What it is not – feeling bad about consequences; feeling sorrowful/bad without relation to the violation of God’s person and His law;        b) What it is –  a) in direct relation to the violation of GOD’ law and person, not be/c you’ve got a bad life, want to make improvements, etc   b)lit. ‘an about face, turning from, turning to Someone’    c) no change, no Jesus! – 2 Cor 5:17
Faith –  1) What it is not – a) it’s not faith in ‘my faith’   b) mental assent             2) What it is – total trust; commitment to another as your only source of hope
–Illustration – do you believe chair will hold you up if you sit in it? Not only do you sit in it, but you love it/desire it as your all in all for what it is!
Warnings about bad ‘evangelism’
Not being careful to see if person needs law or gospel: Comfortable? They need afflicted by law   Afflicted by godly sorrow (note diff. between worldly sorrow, sorrow over consequences only, etc)? need comfort, invitation of gospel What happens to sharing John 3:16 (not saying that God can’t use this in and of itself) when they don’t see their NEED? See 1 Cor. 1:23 Society has DRAMATICALLY changed and you are foolish to assume people today have the understanding of the basics (who God is, their sinfulness, what true salvation is, etc) of the Bible. We are back at Acts 17 model: Creator, creation, fall, redemption, Jesus, repentance/faith, etc.
Feeling all has to be done in one meeting. Evangelism is a process. Cf. 1 Cor. 3:5-8…don’t think you’ve done a bad job if you’ve only got to mostly share law due to their stubbornness of heart.
Pushing them/cornering them into a decision…Let them know God commands all men everywhere to repent (Acts 17:30) but give them room to ‘think about’ it. Don’t create spurious decisions, and hence help deceive them into thinking they are ok. Much of today’s problems is trying to convince those who are lost, who made decisions, that they are actually lost because of shoddy evangelism.
Don’t be shy from calling them to repentance – it is a surrender of their life, a change of their heart that results in forsaking of their old ways and following Christ
Quick Share
Who is God/Christ and what He has done (Creation, Fall, Recreation/Redemption is a good summary of the biblical storyline)
Use the 10 commandments to show them their sin and Christ’s righteousness that they need
Christ died as their substitute (paying the penalty of death and absorbing God’s wrath against sin), literally rose again, and is going to judge everyone.
Call them to their biblical response (explain to them repentance and faith). Maybe they want to think about it. Remember God is honored in us sharing His glory as He moves them closer to trusting in Him!
